Cambridge-based social enterprise Citylife has become the first organisation in the East of England to be awarded the 'Social Enterprise Mark'.
The Social Enterprise Mark, launched earlier this year, is the new brand for ‘social enterprises’ – businesses that trade to benefit people and planet. The Mark identifies businesses which meet defined criteria for social enterprise and helps consumers to recognise businesses that exist for social benefit.
Citylife’s aim is to support other organisations working to make a social difference. On a national level it issues charitable bonds as a unique and innovative way to generate funds for social causes. Since its first Bond in 1999 to finance employment initiatives in Sheffield, Citylife has issued charitable bonds on behalf of a range of causes, directing funding to activities that have helped thousands into work, into training or out of debt.
Locally, Citylife works with social enterprises, charities and community groups across Cambridgeshire to provide business advice, affordable workspace and support with measuring and improving their social impact.
Citylife was awarded the Mark by Lord Andrew Mawson OBE at a recent presentation that took place at Westminster Hall. Lord Mawson, one of the UK’s foremost social entrepreneurs, was delighted to present Citylife with the Mark. “I congratulate Citylife on not only receiving this award but also being the first in the East of England to gain the Social Enterprise Mark. This recognises the huge achievements of Citylife in bringing together communities to help tackle unemployment and poverty that faces too many people in the UK today."
Tim Jones, chief executive of Citylife, said “We are extremely proud to have been awarded the Social Enterprise Mark. It recognises that we are driven not by the need to make money for ourselves or any shareholders, but by our passion to make a social difference. The Mark is an excellent badge of our credentials and will be a great asset in the exciting development plans we have ahead.”
