Why is our work needed?
There are many reasons why someone can become unemployed: lack of training, lack of local opportunities and lack of resources to move or commute, lack of childcare, or if an individual is close to retirement age when made redundant. There are many reasons why someone may not be able to find employment. The good news is though that with a little help many of these barriers can be overcome.
A higher employment rate means a happier and healthier society for everyone. The effects of unemployment on both the individual and the community can be shocking:
- Poverty: Unemployed people are not only limited financially but, over time, also by their aspirations, experience and imagination
- Crime: 70% of all serious crime is committed by unemployed people.
- Debt: Unemployed people are often prey to doorstep lenders who can charge interest rates as high as 2000%
- Health: On average a person in employment will visit their GP twice a year. An unemployed person will visit their GP six times a year.
- Hope: The rate of attempted suicide amongst the unemployed is 10 times as high as for those in employment.
But by working together, Citylife believes we can tackle and beat the causes and consequences of unemployment and so alleviate the extensive cost – in human and financial terms.
By working with us, we can help thousands of people break back into society and realise their full potential.
